Determination of chlorophenoxy acids-2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy) propanoic acid (2,4-DP), 2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) propanoic acid (MCPP), 4-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy) butanoic acid (MCPB) and 2-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy) propanoic acid (2,4,5-TP) in spiked human urine samples has been carried out by capillary LC, after solid-phase extraction on a column packed with silica C18 restricted-access material.

The pesticides and herbicides determined were 2,4-dichlorophenoxy (2,4-D), 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (MCPA), dichlorprop, mecoprop, 2,4, 5-trichlorophenoxy (2, 4, 5-T), 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxy butyric acid (MCPB), beta-endosulfan, methoxychlor and 2, 2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-1, 1-dichloroethene (DDE).
The extract was analyzed using an SGE C18 column with a linear gradient elution (methanol-phosphoric acid as mobile phase at a flow rate of 0.8 mL/min) and ultraviolet detection at 230 nm.

Despite some minimal retention on the upper RP-SPE cartridge, most of the acidic herbicides could be extracted on the lower DIE-SPE cartridge with recovery over 80% except for Chloramben (50%), fenoprop (73%), MCPB (67%), and 2,4-DB (70%) when a 500-mL aqueous sample of pH 9.5 was percolated through the tandem-cartridge system.
C18 bonded silica was the solid-phase material used.

Four types of soils, including sand, clay and peat, with a range in organic matter content of 0.3-13% and ten acidic pesticides of different chemical families (bentazone, bromoxynil, metsulfuron-methyl, 2,4-D, MCPA, MCPP, 2,4-DP, 2,4,5-T, 2,4-DB and MCPB) were selected as matrices and analytes, respectively.
The latter consisted of the selection of a 5-microm GFF-II internal surface reversed-phase (ISRP, Pinkerton) analytical column (50 x 4.6 mm, I.D.) as the first column in the RAM-C18 configuration in combination with an optimised linear gradient elution including on-line cleanup of sample extracts and reconditioning of the columns.
