Analysis of the dose-dependent effects of prochloraz on the secretion of steroidogenic intermediates suggested that the observed effects on cortisol and aldosterone secretion might be mediated by inhibition of the steroidogenic steps catalysed by CYP17A1 and CYP21A2.

In male fathead minnows, the 8-day prochloraz exposure decreased testosterone (T) production, possibly through inhibition of CYP17.

Toxicol Sci. 2007 Jun;97(2):512-9. Epub 2007 Mar 15.

These results suggest that PCZ inhibits the conversion of progesterone to testosterone through the inhibition of CYP17.

Toxicol Appl Pharmacol. 2006 Jun 1;213(2):160-71. Epub 2006 Jan 10.

Increased expression of P450c17 mRNA was observed in fetal male adrenals, and the androgen-regulated genes ornithine decarboxylase, prostatic binding protein C3 as well as insulin-like growth factor I mRNA were reduced in ventral prostates PND 16.

Toxicol Sci. 2007 May;97(1):65-74. Epub 2007 Jan 18.

The hormone results suggested that PCZ was inhibiting CYP17 activity.

Exposure to PCZ caused a compensatory upregulation in cytochrome P450 c17alphahydroxylase, 17,20-lyase (CYP17) and aromatase (CYP19) expression in the ovary, while KTC did not.
