Polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexanes, and DOTs were analyzed over 1 entire year period in the air of a high altitude remote site (2367 m above sea level) located in Teide (Tenerife, Canary Islands, 28 degrees N16 degrees W) in the Eastern North Atlantic region.
HCB was the individual SOC in higher concentration, 51 pg m (-3), well above than the other SOCs identified, 1-11 pg m (-3).

Atmospheric samples from two European high-mountain areas showed similar composition of semivolatile organochlorine compounds (SOC), such as polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), DDTs, endosulfans, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), and hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs).
SOC of present use, like HCHs and endosulfans, were found in higher concentrations in the warm periods, 32-46 and 4-10 pg m (-3) in the gas + particulate phases, respectively, reflecting their seasonal pattern of use in many European countries.

A total of 50 single compounds consisting of polychlorinated biphenyls (33 congeners), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (alpha-, beta-, gamma-HCH), alpha-endosulfan, cyclodiene pesticides (chlordanes, nonachlor-isomers, oxy-chlordane, heptachlor and chlordane) as well as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) derivatives were analysed and quantified.
The highest concentration levels for a single compound were found for HCB (25-35 pg m (-3)).

The atmospheric deposition of dioxins and furans (PCDD-Fs), dioxin-like polychlorobyphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) was determined in the Lagoon of Venice.
The amount of 2,3,7,8-TCDD equivalents (TEQ) of PCDD-Fs and PCBs in the Venice and Porto Marghera bulk depositions was compared with the guideline value of 15 pg m-2 d-1 for dioxins in depositions proposed by De Fre et al. (1998).

Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT), chlordane and hexachlorobenzene (HCB) were analyzed with GC-MS.
High total DDT (240-3700 pg m (-3)) and chlordane (100-2600 pg m (-3)) concentrations were observed.

Polyurethane foam disks were deployed simultaneously at 77 sites, between Sept 21 and Nov 16, 2004, and analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), organochlorine compounds (hexachlorobenzene (HCB), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs), chlordane), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).
Air concentrations estimated assuming an average sampler uptake rate of 3.5 m3/day ranged as follows (pg m (-3)): PCBs, 5-340; HCB, 10-460; DDTs, 0.4-1800; chlordanes, 1-660; PBDEs, < 0.13-340.

Levels of p,p'-DDT (42+/-27 pg m (-3)) and its derivatives were relatively high and showed an unusual mixture with high levels of p,p'-DDD (12+/-11 pg m (-3)).
Other pesticides detected and quantified included aldrin, chlordanes, hexachlorobenzene and dieldrin.

The main constituents of the penta-BDE product were detected at amounts equivalent to 2.0 (range 1.1-2.5) and 1.1 (0.8-1.6) pg m (-3) for the U.K. and Norway background sites, respectively.
Sequestered amounts of hexachlorobenzene increased with latitude.
