On the other hand, an artificial substance, pentachlorophenol (PCP), which is widely used for wood preservation, causes mitochondrial dysfunction and hemolysis in vitro, both of which can be suppressed by albumin.

The fractions bound at 4% albumin varied between 11 and 15% for dextropropoxyphene and potassium cyanide, respectively, and more than 99% for hexachlorophene, pentachlorophenol and mercuric chloride.

Calculated fractions bound to albumin in the normal growth medium were 0.075-0.17 (p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, dieldrin, lindane), 0.09-0.1 (4-mono- and 2,4-dichlorophenol), 0.68 (2,4,5-trichlorphenol) and almost 1.0 (pentachlorophenol).

The aim of the present study was to measure the influence of albumin binding on cytotoxic concentrations of chemicals and to determine binding parameters which can be used for quantitative in vitro-in vivo extrapolations.
Increasing the BSA concentration either decreased the cytotoxic potency (12 compounds) by factors up to 34 (pentachlorophenol), had no effect (14 compounds), or increased the cytotoxicity (paraquat).

9049051 Matsumura H, Matsuoka M, Igisu H, Ikeda M: Cooperative inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activities by hexachlorophene in human erythrocytes. Arch Toxicol. 1997;71(3):151-6.

Hexachlorophene (HCP), pentachlorophenol (PCP), 2,4,5-trichlorophenol (2,4,5-TCP) and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (2,4,6-TCP) all hemolyzed washed human erythrocytes and inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AchE) activities in erythrocyte membrane.
The inhibition of AchE activities by HCP was reversed on adding albumin.

By contrast a significant and constant uncoupling of the phosphorylative process, fully reversed by albumin, in mitochondria from rats treated with hexachlorobenzene and hexachlorobenzene plus iron has been presented.
A possible involvement of pentachlorophenol in causing these abnormalities has been proposed.
