18534571 | Mikami M, Goubaeva F, Song JH, Lee HT, Yang J: beta-Adrenoceptor blockers protect against staurosporine-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Eur J Pharmacol. 2008 Jul 28;589(1-3):14-21. Epub 2008 Apr 25. We studied the effects of three beta-adrenoceptor blockers (1-(isoproplyamino)-3-(naphthalene-1-yloxy) propan-2-ol), (2-[4-[2-hydroxy-3-(1-methylethylamino) propoxyl] phenyl] ehanamide), and ICI 118551 (1-[2,3-(dihydro-7-methyl-1H-iden-4-yl) oxy]-3-[(1-methylethyl) amino]-2-but anol), against staurosporine-induced apoptosis in SH-SY5Y human neuroblastoma cells. Staurosporine increased caspase 3-like activity, DNA fragmentation, PARP cleavage, and the number of TUNEL positive cells consistent with the induction of apoptosis. |

19056905 | Teisanu RM, Lagasse E, Whitesides JF, Stripp BR: Prospective isolation of bronchiolar stem cells based upon immunophenotypic and autofluorescence characteristics. Stem Cells. 2009 Mar;27(3):612-22. Bronchiolar stem cells have been functionally defined in vivo on the basis of their resistance to chemical (naphthalene) injury, their infrequent proliferation relative to other progenitor cell types, and their coexpression of the airway and alveolar secretory cell markers Clara cell secretory protein and pro-surfactant protein C, respectively. Cell surface markers that have previously been used for their prospective isolation included Sca-1 and CD34. |

19861952 | Krause A, Xu Y, Joh J, Hubner R, Gess A, Ilic T, Worgall S: Overexpression of sonic Hedgehog in the lung mimics the effect of lung injury and compensatory lung growth on pulmonary Sca-1 and CD34 positive cells. Mol Ther. 2010 Feb;18(2):404-12. Epub 2009 Oct 27. An increase in the number of Sca-1 (+), CD34 (+) CD45 (-), Pecam (-) cells and activation of the sonic hedgehog (Shh) pathway was observed following unilateral pneumonectomy and naphthalene-induced airway injury. |

20172594 | Wang Z, Li S, Shi Q, Yan R, Liu G, Dai K: Calmodulin antagonists induce platelet apoptosis. Thromb Res. 2010 Apr;125(4):340-50. Epub 2010 Feb 20. Here we show that CaM antagonists N-(6-aminohexyl)-5-chloro-1-naphthalene sulfonamide (W7), tamoxifen (TMX), and trifluoperazine (TFP) induce apoptotic events in human platelets, including depolarization of mitochondrial inner transmembrane potential, caspase-3 activation, and exposure. |

Front Biosci. 2006 Sep 1;11:2007-16. Bladder cancer cell lines were treated with all-trans-retinoid acid (ATRA), N-4-hydroxyphenyl-retinamide (4-HPR) and 6-[3-(1-adamantyl)-4 hydroxyphenyl]-2-naphthalene carboxylic acid (CD437). Only CD437 increased Caspase 3 expression. |

Cancer Res. 2008 Oct 15;68(20):8573-81. Furthermore, the cancer cells showed increased levels of activated caspase-3 and induced G (1) cell cycle arrest, which was suppressed by caspase-3 inhibitors. |
