Int J Food Microbiol. 2009 Jul 31;133(1-2):172-8. Epub 2009 May 23.

The two vanB2 isolates showed a phenotype of multiresistance that included, in addition to vancomycin, also ampicillin, erythromycin, tetracycline, streptomycin, kanamycin, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and contained, among others, erm (B), tet (M), ant (6), and aph (3')-III genes.
The inclusion of vanB2 cluster into Tn5382 structure was demonstrated in the two vanB2 isolates, as well as the linkage pbp5-Tn5382, and beta-haemolysis and gelatinase production was identified in one of them.

METHODS: Human bladder cancer cells T-24 (ATCC) were grown in McCoy medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum, penicillin (100 U/mL) and streptomycin (100 mg/mL) in 24-well tissue culture plates.
Cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT assay, MMP activity by gelatinase zymography, and invasion through Matrigel.

E. faecalis carried virulence genes, including a gelatinase gene (gelE; 70.7%), an aggregation substance gene (asa1; 33.2%), an enterococcus surface protein gene (esp; 8.8%), and a cytolysin gene (cylA; 8.8%).
E. faecalis isolates were phenotypically resistant to tetracycline (66.3%), erythromycin (23.8%), streptomycin (11.6%), ciprofloxacin (9.9%), and kanamycin (8.3%).

Strain RJ16 was resistant to ciprofloxacin (MIC > 2 mgl (-1)) and levofloxacin (MIC > 4 mgl (-1)) and showed intermediate resistance to nitrofurantoin and erythromycin, but was sensitive to ampicillin, penicillin, streptomycin, gentamicin, rifampicin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, quinupristin/dalfopristin, vancomycin and teicoplanin.

Pancreatic tissues, taken from abortive fetuses by sterile procedures, were dissected into 1 mm3 segments and digested with 0.1% type IV collagenase.
The isolated cells were grown in media containing low glucose Dulbecco's Modified Eagles's Medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS), 3.7 g/L sodium pyruvate, 0.08 g/L penicillin and 0.1 g/L streptomycin.

METHODS: Phenotypic tests were conducted for antibiotic resistance, clumping response to pheromone, and production of gelatinase, hemolysin and bacteriocin.
Five strains were resistant to tetracycline and one to gentamicin, whereas all were susceptible to ampicillin, benzylpenicillin, chloramphenicol, erythromycin, fusidic acid, kanamycin, rifampin, streptomycin and vancomycin.

A hallmark of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) invasion is its ability to degrade ECM by local production of gelatinase enzymes.
Human RCC 786-0 (ATCC) was grown in RPMI medium supplemented with 10% FBS, penicillin, and streptomycin in 24-well tissue plates.

Oral Surg Oral Med Oral Pathol Oral Radiol Endod. 2009 Oct;108(4):557-64.

All enterococci produced gelatinase, and 4 isolates contained genes encoding enterocins L50A/B and P.
Percentages of antimicrobial resistance and the resistance genes detected among the enterococci were: erythromycin: 100%, erm (B); kanamycin: 75%, aph (3')-IIIa; tetracycline: 50%, tet (L) with/without tet (M); streptomycin: 37%, ant (6)-Ia; chloramphenicol: 12%, catA.

Gelatinase activity was observed for 75% strains; caseinase and elastase was produced by six and two strains, respectively.
Enterobacteria remained susceptible to imipenem, streptomycin and fluoroquinolones.

Almost all strains were resistant to the aminoglycosides, gentamycin, kanamycin, streptomycin, neomycin, and to the semisynthetic penicillin, oxacillin, but resistance to vancomycin was not widespread among our strains: only one Ec. faecium and one Ec. durans strain were found to be vancomycin resistant.
Gelatinase activity was observed in two strains of Ec. faecalis and one strain of Ec. durans. beta-Haemolysis on horses' blood was never detected in any of the strains, independently of species.
