Fall in the activity potential of AChE may account for the interference of dieldrin or its metabolites with the acetylcholine (ACh)--AChE system and deserve consideration in contributing to the neurotoxicity.

In Turkey, the mosquito Anopheles sacharovi has been under field selection pressure sequentially with DDT, dieldrin, malathion and pirimiphosmethyl over a period of 30 years for the purpose of malaria control.
In 1984, the field population of An.sacharovi in the malarious Cukurova plain of Adana Province contained an altered acetylcholinesterase-based resistance gene giving broad spectrum resistance against organophosphorus and carbamate insecticides.

Biochemical enzyme analysis showed that an altered acetylcholinesterase is operating in the field at low levels.
Siguiri populations showed high levels of resistance to DDT, dieldrin and bendiocarb.

The aims of this study were (1) to determine the amount of lipophilic xenobiotics such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are probably of atmospheric origin, and two organochlorines (OC), lindane and dieldrin, which are from irrigation waters, in liver and muscle (2) to define in situ biomarkers and (3) to identify the mode by which fish from 'unpolluted' areas become contaminated.
For example, there is a relationship between the concentrations of the most volatile PAHs and the activity of muscle acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and between the concentration of benzo-PAH and the activities of ATPases in the gills and/or muscle.

METHODS: Standard WHO bioassays, using 0.75% permethrin, 4% DDT, 5% malathion, 0.1% bendiocarb and 4% dieldrin were performed on wild-collected adult anopheline mosquitoes and F1 progeny of An. arabiensis reared from wild-caught females.
Biochemical assays were used to determine the relative levels of detoxifying enzyme systems including non-specific esterases, monooxygenases and glutathione-S-transferases as well as to detect the presence of an altered acetylcholine esterase (AChE).

The para sodium channel gene homologue and the GABA receptor gene Resistance to dieldrin map to the same genome regions as the DDT/pyrethroid and cyclodiene resistance loci, respectively.

Endosulfan resistance was associated with a moderate level of resistance to dieldrin, and resistance to both insecticides was due, in part, to increased detoxification by glutathione S-transferases (GST).
