A comparison between rat soleus and extensol digitorum longus (EDL) muscles that are predominantly slow- and fast-twitch fibers, respectively, showed that the EDL muscle had higher levels of glycogen phosphorylase, most glycolytic enzymes, glycerol 3-phosphate dehydrogenase, and creatine kinase; while the soleus muscle had higher levels of myoglobin, TCA cycle enzymes, electron transfer flavoprotein, and carbonic anhydrase III.

Estrogen-related receptor alpha (ERRalpha) is thought to primarily regulate lipid oxidation and control the transcription of genes in the oxidative phosphorylation pathway in skeletal and cardiac muscles.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2007 Nov;293(5):E1256-64. Epub 2007 Aug 28.

There was a decrease in the intramyocellular lipid-to-total creatine ratio as assessed by in vivo (1) H-MRS in soleus and tibialis anterior muscles by day 7 (reduced by 49 and 46%, respectively; P < 0.01) at the high dose.
In separate experiments where mitochondrial coupling was assessed in vivo (day 7), (31) P-MRS was used to measure hindlimb ATP synthesis and (13) C-MRS was used to measure the hindlimb tricarboxylic acid cycle flux (V (tca)).

The aim of the present preliminary study is to assess whether adaptive changes in oxygen sensing and metabolic signaling, particularly in the control of energy turnover known to occur in cultured cells exposed to hypoxia, are detectable also in the muscles of animals and man.
