Aim: The curative effect of emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methyl anthraquinone), an active compound of the plant species Ventilago maderaspatana Gaertn, was evaluated against carbon tetrachloride (CCl (4)) induced hepatic cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymatic and ultrastructural alterations in rats.
Results: The CCl (4) induced-toxic effects were observed with sharp elevation in the release of serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase.

The present study describes the ability of an anthraquinone derivative aloe emodin (AE) to reduce the cytotoxic activity of the platinum (II)-based anticancer agent cisplatin toward murine L929 fibrosarcoma and C6 glioma cell lines.
The protective effect of AE was demonstrated by MTT and crystal violet assays for cell viability, and involved supression of cisplatin-induced apoptosis and necrosis, as assessed by lactate dehydrogenase release and flow cytometric analysis of DNA fragmentation or phosphatidylserine exposure.

Anthraquinone compounds have been shown to induce apoptosis in different cancer cell types.
However, reductions in adenosine triphosphate levels and increases in lactate dehydrogenase activity indicated that chrysophanol stimulated necrotic cell death.

19800773 Bhadauria M: Dose-dependent hepatoprotective effect of emodin against acetaminophen-induced acute damage in rats. Exp Toxicol Pathol. 2009 Oct 2.

Protective effect of emodin (1,3,8-trihydroxy-6-methyl anthraquinone), an active compound of Ventilago madraspatana Gaertn., was evaluated against acetaminophen-induced biochemical and histological alterations in rats.
Acetaminophen (2g/kg, po) administration caused significant elevation in the release of serum transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, lactate dehydrogenase, serum bilirubin and serum protein with concomitant decrease in hemoglobin and blood sugar after 24h of its administration.

Application to the purification of bovine heart L-lactate dehydrogenase..
This ligand is an anthraquinone monochlorotriazinyl dye comprising two moieties: (a) the ketocarboxyl biomimetic moiety, 2-(4-aminophenyl)-ethyloxamic acid, linked on the monochlorotriazine ring, mimicking the natural substrate of LDH, and (b) the anthraquinone chromophore moiety, linked also on the same monochlorotriazine ring via a diaminobenzenesulfonate group, acting as pseudomimetic of the cofactor NAD+.
