This study examined the effect of entrapping nerve growth factor (NGF) within the conducting polymer poly (ethylene dioxythiophene) (PEDOT) during electrodeposition to create a polymer capable of stimulating neurite outgrowth from proximal neural tissue.
Future studies will determine the effect of typical neural prosthetic stimulation regimes on the release of neurotrophins and subsequent cell response.

In this work, we engineered degradable, injectable alginate microspheres and non-degradable, implantable poly (ethylene vinyl acetate) matrices to continuously deliver BDNF to the dorsal hippocampus of rats for two days or more than a week, respectively.

Support of linear axonal growth into spinal cord lesion sites has been demonstrated using arrays of uniaxial channels, templated with agarose hydrogel, and containing genetically engineered cells that secrete brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF).
Alternatively, here it is shown that pH-responsive H-bonded poly (ethylene glycol)(PEG)/poly (acrylic acid)(PAA)/protein hybrid layer-by-layer (LbL) thin films, when prepared over agarose, provided sustained release of protein under physiological conditions for more than four weeks.
