Expression increased markedly during grain development at the levels of activity, enzyme protein and mRNA. mRNA content, but not enzyme activity, could be increased further by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) when isolated, de-embryonated developing grains were pre-treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) or fluridone.

During submergence, the tolerant M202 (Sub1) displayed restrained leaf and internode elongation, chlorophyll degradation, and carbohydrate consumption, whereas the enzymatic activities of pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase were increased significantly compared with the intolerant M202.
Sub1A and Sub1C transcript levels were shown to be upregulated by submergence and ethylene, with the Sub1C allele in M202 also upregulated by treatment with gibberellic acid (GA).

A transcript derived fragment (TDF511) was isolated which showed high similarity to alcohol dehydrogenases.
The gene corresponding to this TDF, named Stgan, is likely to be involved in biosynthesis or breakdown of compounds affecting gibberellic acid (GA) levels in the plant [Plant J. 25 (6) (2001) 595].

In an effort to understand the molecular mechanism of gibberellin (GA) action, we have cloned and performed an initial characterization of three cDNAs (GAD1, 2, and 3) which correspond to RNAs that become less abundant by 2 h after treatment of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) shoot tissue with gibberellic acid (GA3).
The predicted GAD2 protein sequence is similar to 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases while the predicted GAD3 protein sequence is similar to proteins belonging to the nonmetallo-short-chain alcohol-dehydrogenase family, especially the T ASSELSEED2 (TS2) gene of maize and bacterial hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases.

After 4 days in an atmosphere of N (2), aleurone layers of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv Himalaya) remained viable as judged by their ability to produce near normal amounts of alpha-amylases when incubated with gibberellic acid (GA (3)) in air.
Prior incubation of layers for 1 day under N (2) changed this ratio to about 0.8, indicating an increase in the relative importance of the lactate branch of glycolysis.l (+) Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity was low in freshly prepared aleurone layers and increased 10-fold during 2 days under N (2), whereas alcohol dehydrogenase activity (ADH) was high initially and rose by 60%.

Gibberellic acid (GA) promotes hydrolase production, whereas abscisic acid (ABA), hypoxia, and osmotic stress reduce amylase production.
