The low-beta-amylase1 (lba1) mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana has reduced sugar-induced expression of Atbeta-Amy and shows pleiotropic phenotypes such as early flowering; short day-sensitive growth; and seed germination that is hypersensitive to glucose and abscisic acid and resistant to mannose. lba1 was a missense mutation of UPF1 RNA helicase involved in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), which eliminates mRNAs with premature termination codons (PTCs), and replaces highly conserved Gly851 of UPF1 with Glu.

This gene is expressed in response to NaCl and not polyethlene glycol (PEG) nor abscisic acid, and its expression increases with time.

Northern blot analysis demonstrated that the RNA expression of the GmRH was induced during low temperature or high salinity stress, but not by the exogenous application of abscisic acid or drought stress.

Germination of mutant seed was hyposensitive to the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA), but mutants showed up-regulated expression of genes encoding ABA-dependent stress-responsive transcriptional activators and their downstream targets.

Furthermore, real-time PCR analysis revealed that mannitol, NaCl, methyl viologen and abscisic acid induced the expression of MH1.

This chapter first describes the adverse effect of salinity stress and general pathway for the plant stress response, followed by roles of various ion pumps, calcium, SOS pathways, ABA, transcription factors, mitogen-activated protein kinases, glycine betaine, proline, reactive oxygen species, and DEAD-box helicases in salinity stress tolerance.

Analysis of public expression profiling data suggests that Arabidopsis thaliana homologs of ACIF1 (VFBs) regulate defense responses via methyl jasmonate- and abscisic acid-responsive genes.
Silencing of tobacco ACIF1 suppressed the HR triggered by various elicitors (Avr9, Avr4, AvrPto, Inf1, and the P50 helicase of Tobacco mosaic virus [TMV]).
