The objectives of this study were to determine and compare the ability of p,p'-dichlorodiphenylethane (p,p'-DDE), p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (p,p'-DDT), hexachlorobenzene (HCB) and r-hexachlorocyclohexane (r-HCH) to interact with ERalpha, androgen receptor (AR), progesterone receptor (PR) and estrogen-related receptor (ERRgamma) using a set of recombined yeast strains expressing beta-galactosidase, under control of ERalpha, AR, PR or ERRgamma.

In this work we use two yeast systems to test the ability of different chemicals to bind and activate two vertebrate receptors which are intimately related to adverse biological effects of pollution in exposed fauna: the estrogen receptor (ER) and the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR).
The panel of compounds analysed here includes well-known pollutants, like PCBs, pp'-DDT and hexachlorobenzene, together with the less-known, emerging putative pollutants, such as Sea-Nine, Irgarol and diuron.

Produced water samples were characterized for the presence of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and estrogen receptor (ER) agonists using the dioxin-responsive, chemical-activated luciferase gene expression assay (DR-CALUX) and yeast estrogen screen (YES) bioassays.
These include persistent organic contaminants, such as hexachlorobenzene, decachlorobiphenyl, and octachlorodibenzofuran.
