RESULTS: The catalase inhibitors sodium azide (5 mM) and aminotriazole (5 mM) as well as CYP2E1 inhibitors diallyl sulfide (2 mM) and beta-phenethyl isothiocyanate (0.1 mM) lowered significantly the accumulation of the ethanol-derived AC and acetate in brain homogenates.

BACKGROUND: Recently, we showed that, in addition to cytochrome P-4502E1 (CYP2E1), CYP1A2 and CYP3A4 also contribute to the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS).
When MEOS activity is measured, sodium azide commonly is used to block the contaminating catalase.

Sulforaphane was unable to inhibit mutagenicity of sodium azide (5 micrograms/plate), a direct acting mutagen, in the Salmonella assay.

As the intestinal mechanisms of acrylamide absorption are poorly investigated we studied the transport of acrylamide in differentiated Caco-2 cells and its effects on biotransformation enzymes (CYP2E1 and glutathione S-transferase) and glutathione levels.
Predominantly, basal to apical transport was decreased when energy metabolism of the cells was inhibited by application of sodium azide and 2-deoxy-d-glucose.
