27531 Lumeng L: The role of acetaldehyde in mediating the deleterious effect of ethanol on pyridoxal 5'-phosphate metabolism. J Clin Invest. 1978 Aug;62(2):286-93.

Ethanol oxidation lowered the pyridoxal phosphate content of isolated liver cells when acetaldehyde oxidation was inhibited by either disulfiram or prior treatment of rats with cyanamide.
In the presence of alkaline phosphatase, acetaldehyde accelerated the degradation of pyridoxal phosphate in dialyzed hemolysate supernate and hepatic cytosol with added pyridoxal phosphate.

A potent carcinogen, methylnitrosocyanamide was used to induce revertants in a strain of Escherichia coli carrying an amber mutation in a gene for tryptophan (trp) biosynthesis and an ochre mutation in a gene for alkaline phosphatase biosynthesis.

2807159 Lin RC, Lumeng L: Further studies on the 37 kD liver protein-acetaldehyde adduct that forms in vivo during chronic alcohol ingestion. Hepatology. 1989 Nov;10(5):807-14.

Sensitivity of electroimmunotransblot increased 10- to 20-fold when alkaline phosphatase-linked antibody was used in place of horseradish peroxidase, but only one protein-acetaldehyde adduct band was detected in liver.
Addition of cyanamide, an aldehyde dehydrogenase inhibitor, to the AIN'76 alcohol diet greatly increased the intensity of the 37-kD protein-acetaldehyde adduct band on electroimmunotransblot but did not produce other bands.
