Xanthotoxin, a plant allelochemical, induces alpha-cypermethrin insecticide tolerance in Helicoverpa zea (corn earworm); inhibition of tolerance by piperonyl butoxide implicates cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) in the detoxification of this insecticide.

The activities of cytochrome P450 monooxygenases from midguts of final instar larvae to p-nitroanisole (PNOD), ethoxycoumarin (ECOD), methoxyresorufin (MROD) significantly increased in all the resistant strains when compared with the susceptible strain.
The strain 'YG' exhibited 7-, 14- and 21-fold resistance to fenvalerate, cypermethrin and deltamethrin, respectively.

The role of monooxygenases in detoxification of the pyrethroids cypermethrin and deltamethrin was examined.
The results indicate that cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are involved in detoxification of pyrethroids in sea lice. 14C-Deltamethrin was absorbed in a lesser amount in a group of sea lice exposed to a mixture of the compound and PBO than in a group exposed to 14C-deltamethrin alone.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450) are membrane-bound hemoproteins that play important roles in conferring protection against both naturally occurring phytochemicals and synthetic organic insecticides.

Under continual exposure to naturally occurring plant toxins and synthetic insecticides, insects have evolved cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s) capable of metabolizing a wide range of structurally different compounds.
The metabolic profiles for several plant toxins (xanthotoxin, angelicin) and insecticides (cypermethrin, aldrin and diazinon) correlate well with these predictive models.

Vet Parasitol. 2004 Oct 28;125(1-2):163-81.

Farmers continued to use amitraz as the major acaricide for tick control after the diagnosis of resistance, although it was supplemented with moxidectin (dairy farms) or fluazuron, macrocyclic lactones or cypermethrin/chlorfenvinphos.
A second mechanism of OP resistance is linked to cytochrome P450 monooxygenase activity.
