In the present investigation we studied the inhibitory effect of mercuric chloride treatment (3 days with 2.3 or 4.6 mg/kg HgCl2, sc) in mice on cerebral, renal and hepatic delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (ALA-D) activity, and a possible reversal of the effect of mercury by dimercaprol (0.25 mmol/kg, 24 hr after the last mercury injection).

The main goal of this study was to investigate the simultaneous in vitro effects of sodium selenite (Se (4+)) and mercuric chloride (Hg (2+)) on the activity of hepatic, renal and cerebral delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) of adult male mice (Swiss albino).

Acute effects of mercuric chloride (HgCl2) were evaluated on mice.
At 24 h after the last HgCl2 injection, blood, liver and kidney samples were collected. delta-Aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) and Na+, K- (+) ATPase activities, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), non-protein thiols (NPSH) and ascorbic acid concentrations were evaluated.

The effects of these metals on the sulfhydryl-containing enzyme delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) were also investigated.

The effects of CdCl2 and ZnCl2 pretreatments on the inhibition of delta-ALA-D (delta-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase) activity and Hg contents in liver and kidneys of suckling rats intoxicated with HgCl2 were investigated.

HgCl (2)-induced inhibition of delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase activity (approximately 35%) and increase of lipid peroxidation in kidney (approximately 37%) were prevented by lycopene.

Mice received a single dose of mercuric chloride (HgCl2, 4.6 mg/kg, subcutaneously) for three consecutive days.
The results demonstrated that HgCl2 exposure significantly inhibited delta-aminolevulinate dehydratase (delta-ALA-D) activity in liver and only DMPS treatment prevented the inhibitory effect.

The present study examined the effects of HgCl2 exposure (five doses of 5.0 mg/kg between ages 8 to 12 days) on physiological parameters, on porphobilinogen synthase activity, and on mercury content in liver, kidneys and brain from suckling rats.
