12200339 Lucas P, Shimahara T: Voltage- and calcium-activated currents in cultured olfactory receptor neurons of male Mamestra brassicae (Lepidoptera). Chem Senses. 2002 Sep;27(7):599-610.

Total outward currents were composed of three K (+) currents: a Ca (2+)-activated K (+) current activated between -40 and -30 mV and reached a maximum amplitude at +40 mV (605 +/- 351 pA); a delayed-rectifier K (+) current activated between -30 and -10 mV, had a mean amplitude of 111 +/- 67 pA at +60 mV and was inhibited by 20 mM tetraethylammonium (TEA); and, finally, more than half of ORNs exhibited an A-like current strongly dependent on the holding potential and inhibited by 5 mM 4-aminopyridine (4-AP).

The olfactory bulb, a second-order sensory brain region, relays afferent input from olfactory receptor neurons to piriform cortex and other higher brain centers.
Surprisingly, larger-amplitude hyperpolarizing stimuli impeded spike generation by recruiting a transient outward I (A)-like current that was sensitive to high concentrations of 4-aminopyridine and Ba.

16019148 Han P, Lucero MT: Pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide reduces A-type K+ currents and caspase activity in cultured adult mouse olfactory neurons. Neuroscience. 2005;134(3):745-56.

To study the effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide on neurons in apoptosis, we measured caspase activation in adult olfactory receptor neurons in vitro.
Interestingly, we found that the protective effects of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating polypeptide were related to the absence of a 4-aminopyridine (IC50=144 microM) sensitive rapidly inactivating potassium current often referred to as A-type current.

Evidence that the chloride conductance can coexist with a 4-aminopyridine-blockable potassium conductance reported earlier in these cells suggests that two distinct mechanisms can mediate odorant-evoked inhibition in lobster olfactory receptor neurons.

At all developmental stages investigated, the outward currents were partly blocked by bath application of the potassium channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4AP, 10 mM) or by including tetraethylammonium (TEA, 30 mM) in the pipette solution.
